18 Steps began as the accompanying bonus mini-album to Trey's Bar 17 release, consisting of the cutting room floor material that never made it onto Bar 17. Originally bundled free to every customer who ordered Bar 17, what began as a simple bonus CD of outtake material soon became regarded by many fans as a complete record in its own right. In respons, 18 Steps is now available as its own record, available only through Trey's online store via his own Rubber Jungle Records. Featuring studio versions of fan-favorite live material such as "Dark And Down" and "Low," 18 Steps also boasts unique acoustic snippets never before released or played live such as "In Spirals," "Agnes" and "Rose Alone." In hindsight, 18 Steps is more than just extra material from the Bar 17 sessions, it completes the picture that Bar 17 started. In fact, Shine completes the trilogy as much of the material from all three albums was written during the same time period. For a complete view of Trey's mindset and musical career from 2004-2006, all three albums must be taken into consideration.

Released October 3, 2006.

18 Steps is an EP by Trey Anastasio that was included as a bonus with pre-orders of Bar 17 from his official website. The disc contains nine new songs, which are outtakes from Bar 17. Like the tracks on Bar 17, the tunes featured on 18 Steps were recorded over roughly a three year period, from the spring of 2003 to the summer of 2006. 18 Steps can be found in select independent record stores, online auctions, and is still available for download via LivePhish.

"'18 Steps' is comprised of bonus material from 'Bar 17,' which didn’t make the album cut, but hey, it made a new album. With nine complete tracks of “out takes,” '18 Steps' comes across as a pieced together folk-jam-rocker. Highlights include: “Discern,” a folk narrative with hints of bluegrass; “Low” – an all out rock number that speaks to the rock crowd of the early ’90s with symphonic accents; “Dark and Down” is a song true to its title - it may be a loud rock number, but its tempo and mood stay mysterious all five minutes of the track. Anastasio also shows his experimental side with “Words To Wonda.” The piece is almost all comprised of percussive instruments – various drums, distortion, and piano, with the underlying signature Anastasio guitar work that drives the song."
