"I Die For You Today" markiert den Auftakt zur aktuellen künstlerischen Bilanz der Band. Das Ergebnis ihrer internationalen Reise heißt CATCHING RAYS ON GIANT, das am 19. November erscheint. Auf dem achten Studioalbum der Band werden die komplexen Soundwelten von Alphaville in 12 neue (Pop-) Songs gefasst. Mal hymnisch, mal verhalten erzählt Marian Gold seine eigenwilligen Geschichten.

Alphaville's 2010 comeback album sets the time at defiance, playing as if the last two decades never existed, but the band's return to its prime form is so flawless the record sounds almost timeless. Thirteen years since their last commercial studio album, they pick up where synth pop left off: midtempo beats impossible not to tap to, romantic and nervous keyboard textures that take that space ambience of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream and put it to work, and dramatic vocals with a weepy edge, like Erasure is still the hottest new thing in town. This is supposed to sound plastic, but it doesn't, the hooks are too good, the melodies too convincing, and the mood is pinned down perfectly, as if the band spent all the time since 1997's Salvation working full-time to polish their stuff (though, as Axl Rose demonstrated, that's not necessarily a good thing). Besides, good dance-pop music hasn't really changed much since Alphaville's heyday, and there's since been plenty of synth pop aficionados keeping the flame alive and making Catching Rays on Giant relevant, but even if the style had been buried and forgotten after "Forever Young," this record would still shine through simply on the strength of its songwriting. Only on slower songs does it show that the band is no bunch of bright-eyed youngsters anymore; there are plenty of ballads, and Alphaville come across tired on those. But they also sound content, as if after a hard day's good work, they have the right to rest on their laurels. Of European pop heroes of the ‘80s, only a-ha have so far showed such longevity and the ability to mature without losing their best qualities, but Catching Rays on Giant adds another group to that singular list.

Alexey Eremenko - All Music Guide

Catching Rays On Giant macht da keinen Unterschied.

Song For No One (But Myself)

Your will against my vision
Your world against my worlds
Your war ain't my decision
Your port against my pearls

Your sense against my madness
Your void against my screams
Your bitch against my gladness
Your fakes against my dreams

This is a song for no one but myself
This is a song for no one but myself
This is a song for no one but myself

Your lies are your perceptions
Your reins against my rights
Your fear is your religion
Your race against my pride

Your end is my beginning
Your dance has all gone wrong
Your blaze against my music
Your blare against this song

This is a song for no one but myself
This is a song for no one but myself
This is a song for no one but myself

Your wish against my vision
Your world against my worlds
Your war ain't my decision
Your port against my pearls

This is a song for no one but myself
This is a song for no one but myself
This is a song for no one but myself

I Die For You Today

Come in close to me and bring me joy
Lift me higher, much higher and higher than light allows
I wanted to be everything, everything for you
I wanted you, I needed you, I thought that you did too
You built me beauty and took it all away
And I can't face another day...
I'll die for you today...

Tempt me, sweet tempest - and shower me with stars
I want to be as beautiful as you
Take me to the summit and show me
Show me all that I could ever have
You brought me everything, I ever thought I wanted
And now you take it all away
You gave me love and then you killed me blindly
I think I'll die for you today, I can't persue another way...
I'll die for you today...

Like a garden growin' in flames
A forest filled with fear of the wind
Like the moon so beautiful from afar
But shattered on the surface, full of scars
A sea with no more fish, planets without air
Whales with no more song
I know I'm gonna die with them today...
I'll die for you today...

End Of The World

Moving to the far horizons where the great big waters fall
And the last of the clowns gonna tell the tale what will happen to us all
All you people got to go on this carnival of doom
And I guess you know things got out of hand
And if not you will know soon

Let’s go to the end of the world and keep your eyes wide open
To see what’s up on the other side and rave across the skies
Let’s go!

On a quest for Eldorado past the valley of the dolls
No matter what they guarantee the banks of God are closed
What’s behind the cracks in heaven, will we make our final stand
Cause it seems to me the more we pray the less there is a happy end

Let’s go to the end of the world and keep your eyes wide open
To see what’s up at the edge of time & rave across the skies
Let’s go!
And the coloured girls go...

The Things I Didn't Do

I didn't say I love you,
The words just wouldn't come
I didn't tell you baby that you're the only one
Will I regret forever, I hope that isn't true,
The things I didn't do

I hardly understand the things I've done
I used to be so thoughtless all the time
I can't explain the man that I once was
I'm sorry for the things that made you cry
And I know all of my excuses are nothing more
Than staggering beggars
Who come crawling back to you

I didn't hold you in my arms, every day
I didn't kiss your lips and promised
That I would always stay
Will I regret forever, I pray that isn't true,
The things I didn't do
I hardly understand the things I've done …

I'll walk your dog, I'll feed your cat
You won't forget the date we met
I'll clean your shoes, I'll wash your dishes
I'll keep off the booze, I'll feed all your fishes
I'll clean the floor, I'll be your slave
And I'll put flowers on your grave

He'll put flowers on her grave

Heaven On Earth (The Things We've Got To Do)

You say that love's the answer,
The greatest ruling force
That carries you forever beyond the farthest cause
Oh, will we ever learn the lessons of the world
Instead repeating history without
A care how much we hurt
Sometimes it seems
That we will never ever understand
The things we got to do

Dance like no one is watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt
The things we got to do
Sing like noone is listening
And live like it's your last day on earth...

If nothing lasts forever that doesn't mean it's cheap
It's only the beginning of something rather deep
We're trying to survive,
We're always on the run
The sky's in ever blue
But the sun is long, long gone
A stranger at the corner pretending to be me
Could it really be, could it be me

Dance like no one is watching...

The Deep

Deep in myself I hear you like a distant sound
Emitted from a secret distant star
Made out of yearning and of sweet desire
Which I would never tire of listening to like gentle ocean surf

Deep in myself you're buried like a hidden treasure
Within a chest filled up with withered comforts
On which I'm keeping ceaselessly my jelous eyes
In glaring embers and in raging ire

Deep in myself you're resting like a heavy stone
That's dragging me into the bottom of a lake
I'm sinking fast but never will I drown
And up above I scry those little cockle boats
They cross the sky with tenderly entangled lovers

Deep in myself

Call Me

You know I've never been in love, just read some books about it
You know I've never been with you before
But we can meet each other soon to taste a moment lost in life
The touch of fading memories
So if you want me in your life I swear I won't forsake you
And play this tune to all the fools who fly where angels fear to tread

Just call me and I'll make it, I'll fill the black holes in your heart
Just call before you break it
Just call me and I'll make it, I've been around right from the start
Just call me and I'll take it to keep it save …

I know you better than myself, I've been around for so long
Your posters hanging on my wall – untouched
And all these bitches in your life, they made me sick and tired
I locked them up inside my mind, so deep
And now the time has come for you and me to keep our promise
This is your lucky day, the hunter's captured by the game at last

Just call before we break it and fill the black holes in my heart
Just call and I will take it
Just call me & we'll make it, you should've known we'll never part
Just call and don't forsake it, we'll never part

Gravitation Breakdown

The smell of dying shadows, letters filled with flaring words
Burnt to hell or ripped to pieces
All the dreams that drove you crazy, all the love that you could give
Thrown away and gone down the gutter
And you need a place to go and you need a place to rest
You need something to replace the black hole in your chest

Down to the dancefloor and into the glaring lights
It's a gravitation breakdown but it's alright
Into the fire and on to the open space
And you're twirling like a go-go and it's all night long...

Venus' buggin' in your stomach, Mars is blazing in your eyes
There are things you regret before you do them
There's no way to shake off the pain now, there's no way to start again
Just the hammer and the beating of the drums
Where you dance nobody danced before you
They can only stare at you
As you're racing with the music to the end of the world

Down to the dancefloor...

Carry Your Flag

we must have played
for more than ten years
we must have thought
that we're immortal
shame, shame on us,
ah little hussy,
what did you think i was
i look at us
we have grown older
a lot too much
for me to take
i thought
we were immortal
i'm so sorry
i couldn't keep my promise..
..to carry on your flag for you
some superhero-being
it seems to me
that we are changing
there ain't no limit
to imagination
the world just turns around
without a care
sometimes i feel like crying
and every time
i need to touch you
how can i ever
break the distance
that's why my love
became so strong and pure
that's why i keep on
trying forever..
..to carry on your flag for you
some superhero-being
f o r y o u
some superhero-being
waiting
under the light of the moon
f o r y o u..
i'm coming soon.

Call Me Down

Call me down when no one's around
I'm spinning down to the ground
Don't say no, there's nowhere else to go
I need to be there tonight

Sunlight, shadow, night on day, no beginning anyway
Are you my twin? Or opposite? There is no clear solution
Darkness, light, black & white, some are wrong and some are right
To know me better merely takes higher resolution

To know me better merely takes some kind of illusion
Call me down when no one's around
I'm spinning down to the ground
Don't say no, there's nowhere else to go
I need to be there tonight

Phantoms

All the people walking by seem to need an answer
Something's missing, don't know why
How the hell did we get here?
But when I look around, I understand
And everything comes clear to me
It's plain to see but what's behind that blinding light?

All the truths & all the lies pushing down upon us
A million choices every day
What are we supposed to do, tell me everything will be alright
And I'll be sleeping sound tonight

There're so many phantoms left, doomed for evermore
Here we are just counting sheep, eyes transfixed on monitors

We are dreamers deeply rapt in shifting sands of irreality
It's plain to see, rising and falling with the tides!

All the truths & all the lies

Miracle Healing

Hello my friend!
It's late and I want to sleep
But I just can't make it to my bed
I've got a brand-new song on my screen
It's called Miracle Healing
I read it on a sign somewhere in Port of Spain
(29. 4. 2000)
I remember a bright-blue-colonial building
For me it looked like the entrance to paradise
A place full of smiling people, a place full of happiness
I was dreaming to go there
Instead of doing the interview & receive...
A miracle healing of innocence & ectasy
Dreams of independence
Love, caress & energy
The circle & square, sound & vision, angels are singing
You're gonna burn in hell no more
You're gonna burn in hell no more...
Are you sure what to think of me?
Do you know how I should be?
Is there any damn explanation for this world?
And what kind of healing would I need?
Only one thing I know is that I need some help
I must finish this song to find it all out
A miracle healing...

Hello my friend!
It's late and I want to sleep
And I'm sitting here all alone with my ghosts tonite
I don't know what to write to you
I just want to say that I'm thinking of you
And I hope that you're alright
I am, well, ...better
I think it must be because of this letter
And if it's not so then I really don't have a clue
If I slept for a thousand years
Would you dig inside my pyramid?
Would you resurrect me from the dead
Would you light up my darkness
Would you give me...
A miracle healing...?
