2011 CD XL Recordings 44699

21 is the eagerly awaited sophomore album from British singer-songwriter Adele. It’s the follow up to Adele’s critically acclaimed, Grammy award winning debut album 19 (both named after her age at the time the songs were written). Recorded in Malibu and London, 21 offered Adele the opportunity to work with such luminary producers and songwriters as Rick Rubin, Paul Epworth, Ryan Tedder, Dan Wilson and Fraser T. Smith, as well as continuing to work with Francis “Eg” White and Jim Abbiss. This new collection of songs showcases the growth of this incredible artist, who at the very young age of twenty two, exhibits the poise of a seasoned veteran. Adele’s music takes some new direction while staying true to her signature style. “I discovered lots of artists I'd never heard of, particularly Wanda Jackson, Allison Krauss, Yvonne Fair, Andrew Bird, Neko Case, Lady Antebellum and Steel Drivers who I fell in love with. Then I delved in to more from artists I've loved forever - Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Elbow, Mos Def, Alanis Morissette, Tom Waits and Sinead O'Connor. There's something in every single one of these artists that have really really inspired 21.”

Adele nennt u.a. 2009, mit gerade mal 20 Jahren, erhielt Adele 2 Grammys: Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Adele hatte wahrlich einen guten Start; aber aufgepasst: Kapitel 2 beginnt gerade erst!

Adele's 2009 debut album, 19, was a Grammy-winning smash hit that revealed the British singer/songwriter's knack for bittersweet soul and folk-infused love songs that brought to mind an infectious mix of Dusty Springfield and Terry Callier. The album earned her a ton of fans, and interest was high for the inevitable follow-up. In many ways, her sophomore album, the similarly age-appropriate-titled 21, is a continuation of the sounds and themes Adele was working with on 19. She is still the bluesy pop diva with a singer/songwriter's soul and seemingly bottomless capacity for heartbreak. If the tastefully organic production and overabundance of well-known co-writers come off a bit too on-the-nose in terms of delivering to fan expectations, then the best thing the album does is to showcase Adele's titanic vocal ability, which -- more than a few times on 21 -- is simply spine-tingling. Last time around we got the gauzy, Callier-esque folk-soul ballad "Daydreamer" to slowly draw us into the album; here, Adele immediately injects us with the propulsive gospel fever-blues anthem "Rolling in the Deep." While the track certainly owes a heavy debt to the punk-blues of Beth Ditto and the Gossip, it is also ridiculously sexy and one of the best singles of any decade -- and, unfortunately, completely sets the bar way too high for everything else on 21. Which isn't to say that 21 is bad; on the contrary, tracks like the similarly blues-inflected Ryan Tedder co-write "Rumour Has It" and the old-school-style soul cut "He Won't Go" are terrifically catchy, booty-shaking numbers, and exactly the kind of songs you want and expect from Adele. That said, if Adele's voice goes on forever here, so apparently does her appetite for bad relationship mojo. An inordinate amount of the material on 21 is about yearning for lost love. In fact, the centerpiece of the album, the mega-ballad showstopper "Take It All" -- co-written by her "Chasing Pavements" partner Francis White -- begins with Adele proclaiming "Didn't I give it all?" Delivered starkly at first with Adele set against simple piano accompaniment and later backed by a gospel choir, it's an instant-classic sort of song in the tradition of "The Rose," "And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going," and "All by Myself" that could stand over the years as a career landmark for the singer and a cathartic moment for fans who identify with their idol's Pyrrhic lovelorn persona. For others, over the course of the album, that persona and the insistence of track after track of heartbreak can get a bit alienating. Ultimately, however, Adele does give us her all on 21, and for now that is enough.

Matt Collar - All Music Guide

One of the few real beneficiaries of The X Factor effect – her version of Dylan’s Make You Feel My Love has been darting about the top 40 since the audition rounds, showing more staying power than poor Joe McElderry’s last two singles combined – Adele’s stock has risen significantly since becoming the first recipient of the Brits Critics’ Choice award. Since then she’s picked up Grammys and broken the States as a bonus, so the pressure was clearly on for her next move to deliver big. And, oh my, with 21 doesn’t she just. The last few years have seen those who started strongly become mightily unstuck on their sophomore efforts. For every Lily Allen there’s been a Kate Nash or a Duffy – the latter’s comeback, Endlessly, seems to have fallen on significantly fewer ears than the 2.8 million who liked her debut – so it’s a treat to hear that no such problems beset 21. It really is so marvellous, you’re almost compelled to stand up and applaud it after the first listen. With a top-notch production team behind the album, including Rick Rubin and Paul Epworth, every track is a highlight. Current single, Rolling in the Deep, is a modern soul stomper about an errant ex; the literally banging Rumour Has It channels the avenging rock‘n’roll soul of Wanda Jackson; there’s a fine, mellow, acoustic bossa nova-y take on The Cure’s Lovesong. Don’t You Remember is a classically styled ballad, which feels like the sort of tune you’ve known all your life – many are certain to bawl along to it the next time their hearts are broken; and the blues-bruised I’ll Be Waiting could’ve come from any Willie Mitchell-produced southern soul session. Final track Someone Like You, just voice and piano, is an actual thing of beauty, placing the listener in one of those moments where you feel you’re in the presence of a future standard. You can imagine it being both honked through by talent show contestants and transcended by veterans alike. 21 is simply stunning. After only a handful of plays, it feels like you’ve always known it. It will see Adele become an even greater award magnet come the end of the year, leaving her contemporaries for dust. Genuinely brilliant.

21 is the second studio album by English singer-songwriter Adele. Released on 21 January 2011 in the UK and most of Europe, and on 22 February 2011 in North America, the album was named after the age of the singer at the time of its production. While it shares the folk and Motown influences of her debut album 19, also named after the singer's age, 21 was further shaped by the American country and southern blues music Adele encountered during her 2008–09 North American tour. Her second album on the subject of a break-up, 21, like its predecessor, was composed in the wake of the singer's separation from an unnamed partner, and explores various themes of anger and revenge, heartbreak, self-examination, and forgiveness.

The majority of the album's production was handled by Grammy Award-winning American producer Rick Rubin, while additional producers included Jim Abbiss, Paul Epworth, Fraser T. Smith, Ryan Tedder and Dan Wilson. Attracting critical praise for its vintage authenticity, the lyrical depth of the songs, as well as Adele's vocal performance, the album was seen as an artistic improvement over her debut. Preceded by lead single "Rolling in the Deep", which became a worldwide number-one hit, 21 debuted atop the UK Album Chart with first-week sales of 208,000 copies, and peaked at number one in over fifteen countries, including Canada, Australia, Germany and Ireland. In the U.S., the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 352,000 copies in its first week.

Following a highly praised performance of the album's second single "Someone Like You", at the 2011 BRIT Awards, the album maintained its number one position in the UK for eleven consecutive weeks, and, as of July 2011, amassed eighteen total weeks at number one. The album has been certified 10-times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), denoting domestic shipments in excess of three million units, and in the U.S., topped the Billboard 200 for twelve non-consecutive weeks, shifting 2.9 million copies so far. A third single, "Set Fire to the Rain", attained success across several European territories. The success of 21 helped to revive sales of 19, which ascended to new chart peaks within the top ten in New Zealand, and the top three in the UK, Ireland, and Australia, despite its release over three years ago. 21 also broke a number of chart records, its eleven-week stint at the top of the UK Albums Chart becoming the longest consecutive number-one for a solo artist. Ranked as the best selling album of the year so far in both the UK and the U.S., 21 also became the all-time best selling digital album in both territories. As of mid August 2011, worldwide sales for the album exceed ten million copies.

Rolling In The Deep

There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, and it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I'll lay your sheet bare
See how I'll leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do

There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it's bringing me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I've heard one of you
And I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there
As mine sure won't be shared

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it to the beat

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow

(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
It all, it all, it all
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

We could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

You could have had it all
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep
(Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand
(You're gonna wish you never had met me)

But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat.

Rumour Has It

She, she ain't real,
She ain't gonna be able to love you like I will,
She is a stranger,
You and I have history,
Or don't you remember?
Sure, she's got it all,
But, baby, is that really what you want?

Bless your soul, you've got you're head in the clouds,
You made a fool out of you,
And, boy, she's bringing you down,
She made your heart melt,
But you're cold to the core,
Now rumour has it she ain't got your love anymore,

Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,

She is half your age,
But I'm guessing that's the reason that you strayed,
I heard you've been missing me,
You've been telling people things that you shouldn't be,
Like when we creep out and she ain't around,
Haven't you heard the rumours?

Bless your soul, you've got your head in the clouds,
You made a fool out of me,
And, boy, you're bringing me down,
You made my heart melt, yet I'm cold to the core,
But rumour has it I'm the one you're leaving her for,

Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,

All of these words whispered in my ear,
Tell a story that I cannot bear to hear,
Just 'cause I said it, it don't that mean I meant it,
People say crazy things,
Just 'cause I said it, don't that mean I meant it,
Just 'cause you heard it,

Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,
Rumour has it, ooh,

But rumour has it he's the one I'm leaving you for.

Turning Tables

Close enough to start a war
All that I have is on the floor
God only knows what we're fighting for
All that I say, you always say more

I can't keep up with your turning tables
Under your thumb, I can't breathe

So I won't let you close enough to hurt me
No, I won't ask you, you to just desert me
I can't give you, what you think you gave me
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables
To turning tables

Under haunted skies I see you, ooh
Where love is lost, your ghost is found
I've braved a hundred storms to leave you
As hard as you try, no I will never be knocked down

I can't keep up with your turning tables
Under your thumb, I can't breathe

So I won't let you close enough to hurt me, no
I won't ask you, you to just desert me
I can't give you, what you think you gave me
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables
Turning tables

Next time I'll be braver
I'll be my own savior
When the thunder calls for me
Next time I'll be braver
I'll be my own savior
Standing on my own two feet

I won't let you close enough to hurt me, no
I won't ask you, you to just desert me
I can't give you, what you think you gave me
It's time to say goodbye to turning tables
To turning tables
Turning tables, yeah
Turning ohh

Don't You Remember

When will I see you again?
You left with no goodbye, not a single word was said
No final kiss to seal anything
I had no idea of the state we were in.

I know I have a fickle heart and bitterness
And a wandering eye, and a heaviness in my head

But don't you remember, don't you remember?
The reason you loved me before,
Baby please remember me once more.

When was the last time you thought of me?
Or have you completely erased me from your memories?
I often think about where I went wrong.
The more I do, the less I know.

But I know I have a fickle heart and bitterness
And a wandering eye, and a heaviness in my head.

But don't you remember, don't you remember?
The reason you loved me before,
Baby please remember me once more.

Ohhhh

I gave you the space so you could breathe,
I kept my distance so you would be free,
And hope that you find the missing piece
To bring you back to me.

Why don't you remember, don't you remember?
The reason you loved me before,
Baby please remember me once more.

When will I see you again?

Set Fire To The Rain

[Verse1:]
I let it fall, my heart,
And as it fell you rose to claim it.
It was dark and I was over,
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me.
My hands they're strong, but my knees were far too weak, to
stand in your arms without falling to your feet,

[Bridge:]
But there's a side to you that I never knew, never knew.
All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true,
And the games you'd play, you would always win, always win.

[Chorus:]
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
well, it burned while I cried,
Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

[Verse2:]
When i lay with you I could stay there,
Close my eyes, feel you here forever,
You and me together, nothing is better!

[Bridge:]
Cause there's a side to you that I never, never knew,
All the things you'd say, they were never true, never true,
And the games you'd play, you would always win, always win.

[Chorus:]
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
well, it burned while I cried,
Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!
I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
when we fell something died,
Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time!

[Verse:]
Sometimes I wake up by the door,
That heart you caught must be waiting for you
Even now when we're already over
I can't help myself from looking for you.

[Chorus:]
I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
well, it burned while I cried,
Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name
I set fire to the rain,
And I threw us into the flames
when we fell something died
Cause I knew that that was the last time
The last time, oh, oh no
let it burn oh
let it burn
let it burn

He Won't Go

Some say I'll be better without you
But they don't know you like I do
Or at least the sides I thought I knew

I cant bear this time
It drags on as I lose my mind
Reminded by things I find
Like notes and clothes you left behind

Wake me up, wake me up when all is done
I wont rise until this battle's won
My dignity's become undone

But I wont go
I can't do it on my own
If this ain't love, then what is?
I'm willing to take the risk

I wont go
I can't do it all alone
If this ain't love, then what is?
I'm willing to take the risk

So petrified, I'm so scared to step into this ride
What if I lose my heart and fail the climb
I wont forgive me if i give up trying

I heard his voice today
I didn't know a single word he said
Not one resemblance to the man I met
Just a vacant broken boy instead

But I wont go
I can't do it on my own
If this ain't love, then what is?
I'm willing to take the risk

I wont go
I can't do it all alone
If this ain't love, then what is?
I'm willing to take the risk

There will be times
We'll try and give it up
Bursting at the seams, no doubt
We'll almost fall apart then burn the pieces
To watch them turn to dust
But nothing will ever taint us

I wont go
I can't do it on my own
If this ain't love, then what is?
I'm willing to take the risk

I wont go
I can't do it all alone
If this ain't love, then what is?
I am willing to take the risk

Will he... will he still remember me?
Will he still love me even when he's free?
Or will he go back to the place where he would chose the poison over me?

When we spoke yesterday,
You said to hold my breath... to sit and wait
"I'll be home so soon, I wont be late"

He wont go
He cant do it on his own
If this ain't love, then what is?
He's willing to take the risk

So I wont go
He cant do it on his own
If this ain't love, then what is?
We're willing to take the risk

Cause he wont go
He cant do it on his own
If this ain't love, then what is?
We're willing to take the risk

I wont go
I cant do it on my own
If this ain't love, then what is?
I'm willing to take the risk

Take It All

Didn't I give it all?
Tried my best
Gave you everything I had
Everything and no less
Didn't I do it right
Didn't let you down

Maybe you got too use to
Oh having me around
So how can you walk away
From my tears.
It's gonna be an empty road
Without me right here

[Chorus]
But go on and take it
Take it all you
Don't look back
At this crumbling fool
Just take it all
With my love
Take it all
With my love

Maybe I should leave
To help you see
Nothing is better than this
And this is everything we need
So is it over
Is this really it
You're giving up so easily
I thought you loved me more than this

[Chorus]

I would change if I must
Slow it down and bring it home
I will adjust.
Oh if only, if only you knew
Everything I do
Is for you

[Chorus]

I'll Be Waiting

Hold me closer one more time,
Say that you love me in your last goodbye,
Please forgive me for my sins,
Yes, I swam dirty waters,
But you pushed me in,
I've seen your face under every sky,
Over every border and on every line,
You know my heart more than I do,
We were the greatest, me and you,

But we had time against us,
And miles between us,
The heavens cried,
I know I left you speechless,
But now the sky has cleared and it's blue,
And I see my future in you,

I'll be waiting for you when you're ready to love me again,
I put my hands up,
I'll do everything different,
I'll be better to you,
I'll be waiting for you when you're ready to love me again,
I put my hands up,
I'll be somebody different,
I'll be better to you,
Let me stay here for just one more night,
Build your world around me,
And pull me to the light,
So I can tell you that I was wrong,
I was a child then, but now I'm willing to learn,

But we had time against us,
And miles between us,
The heavens cried, I know I left you speechless,
But now the sky has cleared and it's blue,
And I see my future in you,

I'll be waiting for you when you're ready to love me again,
I put my hands up,
I'll do everything different,
I'll be better to you,
I'll be waiting for you when you're ready to love me again,
I put my hands up,
I'll be somebody different,
I'll be better to you,

Time against us,
Miles between us,
Heavens cried,
I know I left you speechless,
Time against us,
Miles between us,
Heavens cried,
I know I left you speechless,
I know I left you speechless,
I'll be waiting,

I'll be waiting for you when you're ready to love me again,
I put my hands up,
I'll do everything different,
I'll be better to you,
I'll be waiting for you when you're ready to love me again,
I put my hands up,
I'll be somebody different,
I'll be better to you.

One And Only

You've been on my mind
I grow fonder every day, lose myself in time
Just thinking of your face God only knows
Why it's taking me so long to let my doubts go
You're the only one that I want

I don't know why I'm scared, I've been here before
Every feeling every word, I've imagined it all,
You'll never know if you never try to forgive your past
And simply be mine

I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
Promise I'm worthy to hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove that I'm the one who can
Walk them miles
Until the end starts

Have I been on your mind
You hang on every word I say, lose yourself in time
At the mention of my name, will I ever love
How it feels to hold you close
And have you tell me which ever road I choose you'll go

I don't know why I'm scared, cuz I've been here before
Every feeling every word, I've imagined it all,
You'll never know if you never try to forgive your past
And simply be mine

I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
I promise I'm worthy to hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove that I'm the one who can
Walk them miles until the end starts

I know it ain't easy
Giving up your heart
I know it ain't easy
Giving up your heart

Nobody's perfect. Trust me, I've learned it.
(I know, it ain't easy, giving up your heart.)
Nobody's perfect. Trust me, I've learned it.
(I know, it ain't easy, giving up your heart.)

Nobody's perfect. Trust me, I've learned it.
(I know, it ain't easy, giving up your heart.)
Nobody's perfect. Trust me, I've learned it.
(I know, it ain't easy, giving up your heart.)

So I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
I promise I'm worthy to hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove that I'm the one who can
Walk them miles until the end starts
Come and give me the chance
To prove that I'm the one who can
Walk them miles until the end starts.

Lovesong

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am whole again

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am young again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am fun again

How ever far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you

Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again

How ever far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you

How ever far away
I will always love you
However long I stay
I will always love you
Whatever words I say
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you

Someone Like You

I heard
That you're settled down
That you
Found a girl
And you're
Married now

I heard
That your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things
I didn't give to you

Old friend
Why you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I hoped you'd see my face and be reminded
That for me it isn't over

Never mind
I'll find someone, like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me I beg
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead."
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead,
Yeah.

You know how
The time flies
Only yesterday
It was the time of our lives
We were born and raised
In a summer haze
Bound by the surprise
Of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over.

Never mind
I'll find someone, like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me I beg
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead"

Nothing compares
No worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes
And memories made.
Who would have known
How bittersweet
This would taste?

Never mind
I'll find someone, like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me I beg
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead"

Never mind
I'll find someone, like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me I beg
I remember you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead"

Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
